Unveiled in September 2005, the Battle of Britain monument in London is a fantastic tribute to everyone who took part in the battle, not just the airmen. The names of “The Few” are cast in bronze and Malcolm’s name can be seen in the photo below.

Situated on Victoria Embankment, opposite the London Eye, between the RAF Memorial and Westminster bridge, the Monument was originally an initiative of the Battle of Britain Historical Society. A committee was formed to raise funds, select a sculptor and oversee the entire project. The monument was paid for by donations from members of the public.

During the initial stages of fundraising the Battle of Britain Historical Society asked for people to sponsor a pilot’s name. I obviously tried to sponsor Malcolm Ravenhill, but was pleasantly surprised to discover somebody else already had. With the help of Steve Gleeson and Mark Andrew at the society I sponsored another 229 Squadron pilot: F/O Vernon Bright. F/O Bright can be seen in a photo with Malcolm on my photos page.

Living close to London my family and I have visited the monument quite a few times. We feel very proud each time we see Malcolm’s name inscribed. In 2007 (coincidentally 15th September, Battle of Britain day) I had the honour of meeting Bill Bond MBE and his wife, there for a ceremony. Bill founded the Battle of Britain Historical Society, and it is thanks to his vision and campaigning that the monument was commissioned.
